On Reading Classical Texts: A Guide for the Student

Practical advice on how to approach classical Arabic treatises and commentary literature.

Approaching classical Islamic literature can be daunting for the modern student. The language is dense, the arguments are highly structured, and the references to other works are frequent.

Here are three guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Find a Teacher: A book cannot explain itself. The keys to the texts are held by the scholars who received them from their teachers.
  • Master the Terminology: Every discipline (fann) has its own technical vocabulary. Do not assume a word means the same thing in a work of Fiqh as it does in a work of Aqidah.
  • Read slowly: It is better to understand one sentence completely than to skim a hundred pages without comprehension.
